Premier's Reading Challenge

Join the biggest children's book club in Australia by taking part in the Premier's Reading Challenge.

The challenge encourages students from kindergarten to Year 9 from all NSW schools to read more books and experience quality literature. It celebrates reading for fun and to develop literacy skills. The challenge is an initiative of the State Literacy Strategy.

Premier's Spelling Bee

Premier's Spelling Bee

Be one of the hundreds of students from public primary schools that take part in the Premier’s Spelling Bee.

Students learn words about topics including the arts, the environment, science, mathematics and sport for the exciting spelling competition. The state finals are broadcast live on ABC Radio.

Premier's Debating Challenge

Premier's Debating Challenge

Add your voice to the debate, with the Premier’s Debating Challenge for public school students from Years 5 – 12. Teams of students from schools across the state have the opportunity to demonstrate their debating skills in 5 competitions:

  • Hume Barbour/English speaking union trophy for students in Years 11 - 12.
  • Karl Cramp trophy for students in Year 11, from metropolitan Sydney schools. Includes a round of debates on environmental issues.
  • Teasdale cup for students in Years 9 – 10. The state final is held at The Art Gallery of NSW.
  • Challenge for students in Years 7 – 8. The winning teams of each district competition attend a debating camp hosted by The Women's College in The University of Sydney.
  • Hunter challenge trophy for students in Years 5 – 6. The winning teams of each district competition attend a debating camp at Stanwell Tops.

Premier's Sporting Challenge

Premier's Sporting Challenge

Run, jump and dive into the Premier’s Sporting Challenge to have fun and get fit through sport. Students from all NSW schools can contribute to their class goal for the challenge by becoming more active.

Incentives for students include sports workshops and gala days and tickets to major rugby union, netball and other events. A Sports Equipment to Schools Grant is also available, and the Get Active in the Middle Years program, Girls in Sport program and Sports Leadership project.

Premier’s Award for All-round Excellence in the NSW HSC

If you are a high achiever across your school subjects, you may be recognised with the Premier’s Award for All-round Excellence in the NSW Higher School Certificate.

Students who achieve marks of 90 or more in their courses, totalling 10 or more units will receive the award with their HSC. The award-winners will be published in major newspapers.
